Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavon, La Romana, Dominican Republic

The basics

Altos de Chavón offers a great introduction to the culture and history of the Dominican Republic. City tours of La Romana typically include a stop here, along with Casa de Campo and a local cigar factory. It’s also possible to visit the town on half-day trips from Punta Cana, day trips that stop at Saona Island or Catalina Island, and cruises on the Chavón River.

Genuinely one of the best tours weve had.
Had booked this trip before reading the recent bad reviews, and we are actually glad to be honest... This trip was absolutely AMAZING!! We were lucky that we visited Altos de Chavon early, and there was only 2 other couples in our group (maybe lucky?). In fact the 6 of us were the only people at Altos de Chavon for nearly an hour. Driver "Richard" was on time and and "Benjamin" was awesome at providing history/information about the area in English and Spanish. Next stop by voach to Bahiyabe Beach, where we met up with a much larger group, and met our Saona Island Guide "Danny Boy". (Again spoke perfect English/Spanish). Speedboat took us to Saona Island in 25 minutes. Stopping at the lagoon for RUM and optional photos (which werent forced on us). We even saw a starfish up close and again this may have just been luck. The speedboat does hit the waves hard, and if you have back problems i would say to not take this tour, as it can be jarring. (Hold on to your hats too). On Saona Island we were the first large group to arrive and had around 2.5 hours to either... eat from a nice fresh buffet, which all food was covered over; or to Sunbath/Swim in the beautiful water. Catamaran then took a more steady 2hr trip back to mainland. Yes there is loud music and dancing +more booze. But we grabbed the netted sunbathing area at the front, which was alot quieter. There were small children aboard and even they were loving their day out. If you dont like partying (loud music) my advise is to not book trip involving a "party boat". It may have been we we're just lucky overall, because of the timing/numbers of people, but thats just life and everyones experience will differ. It is a long day (12hrs from pickup to drop off) but it was by far the best day we have had in the 2 weeks we have been here. I highly recommend this trip, (unless you are the sort of person who expects too much for the price). Overall one of the best tours we've ever been on, and (as per above) we would highly recommend.

Everything was great except the crowd on the island and very expensive photos. The tour guide was also good and Altos de Chavon was really a great experience

Amazing

We loved the village and the island, true paradise. My only two reasons for giving 4 stars is this is a whole day experience and you only get food at lunch which makes the day even longer. Make sure to take some water and some snacks to keep you going unless you can go without food for quite a while. Secondly the constant pressure to give tips like 5-6 times throughout the day was not to our liking. We actually ran out of cash in the end and couldn't give any to the bus driver which we thought was unpolite but couldn't do anything about it. So make sure you take loads with you. Other than these 2 little things the trip was amazing and enjoyed it. Thank you very much.

Great trip to la Isla Saona. The ride on the Catalan was the most memorable experience. The tour guides were great and it was worth an all day excursion.

Nice trip but mass produced and consumed. Numerous bus transfers with some confusion. Service people (guides bartenders marineros dancers) were all attentive. Lunch was ok quality. Our buses brakes caught fire on the way back but the driver recovered quickly and impressed transportation for us back to our stop.

This was an amazing trip. Full day of fun. Benjamin is by far the best daddy out there!! He made sure we were taken care of all day long. Would have been nice to have a little more time on altos de chavron to explore. Natural pool and saona island some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen!! The crew on the boat keeps everyone feeling alive. Only complaint is time spent on bus and switching busses back and forth. But still very organized!! Would definitely do this trip again. Worth every penny!! Thank you Benjamin “big daddy” you were amazing!!!
