Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Jan was an exceptional guide particularly concerned with us in the extreme heat. His knowledge & enthusiasm of history, culture & religion was impressive. This is definitely the highlight of our trip to Rome. Thanks again Jan.

Colosseum Guided Tour with Exclusive Gladiator's Entrance and Arena Floor
Standing on the Colosseum arena floor, entering via the main entrance to the arena, viewing the arena from many levels and view points. Climbing up the steps to the top viewing area of the Palatine Hill. Our expert guide told us about points of interest and key dates and events in their livespan

Skip the Line: Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill Tour
It was a great experience, the tour started on time, we were able to skip the line, smooth and fast entry to the Colosseum. The tour guide lady was funny, she had sound knowledge however her accent was a bit too strong, it was a bit hard to understand. Overall a great tour.

Colosseum with Arena Access and Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
A great tour. Our guide Paulo was friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Saw the Colosseum from both the arena floor and upper levels. Also taken around the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill which would have been difficult to navigate without a guide. Would definitely recommend.

Great Tour of the Colosseum! The tour guide was excellent and gave us a lot of breaks in the shaded areas as it was so hot. I would recommend doing a morning tour in the summertime!

Skip-The-Line Colosseum Tour
Great tour for a very hot day. An hour was enough and our guide was great, she provided plenty of history of the colosseum with a nice mix of what daily life in Rome would have been like.

Colosseum Night Tour
It was an amazing experience and the tour guide allowed you time to take everything in and take photos. They also explained everything clearly about the history of the colosseum and I learnt a lot. Also seeing the colosseum lit up at night is such a wonderful thing. I would definitely recommend this!!

Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour Including Pantheon and Piazza Navona
Our guide was a lovely blonde woman - I'm so sorry I can't remember her name. She shared so many wonderful stories as we toured the Colosseum and other sites. She was friendly and engaging. It was one of our favorite tours! She let us spend time at certain places, and didn't hurry us along. I really appreciated that. This is a long tour - I think close to 4 hours - so be ready! So worth the investment of your time though!

Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour Including Pantheon and Piazza Navona
We had a great tour guide. Very informative I had a lot of history to share about the Colosseum. We only visited the pantheon but we never went inside with the tour. Not sure if that was to be part of the tour. And we never got to the piazza Navona. It was a good thing we had already been there on our own. Maybe we spent too much time at the Colosseum. But still highly recommend the tour

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
