Tulum

Carretera Federal, Cancun - Chetumal Km 230, 307, Tulum, Riviera Maya & the Yucatan

The Basics

Just a short trip from the Hotel Zone of Cancun and next to the Caribbean Sea, the spectacular Tulum ruins are an ideal spot to explore some of the Yucatan's Mayan history. Perched on a rugged coastline, the ruins are modest but well-preserved and boast stunning views of the seaside area. Stroll through the ruins on a self-guided tour, or sign up for one of the many available Tulum tours guided by an archaeologist. Consider booking an early-access tour to avoid having to compete for space with large tour groups.

Highly Recommend!
I can’t recommend this tour enough! We took this tour on Saturday and then did one of the larger tours booked through our resort on Sunday, and we both agree that this tour was by far the better of the two. Alberigo was an incredible tour guide, the food was excellent and authentic. Very fun, high quality tour for a fraction of the big guys.

Tulum Ruins Private Tour with Turtle and Cenote Snorkeling
💯 must go on this tour! Our tour guide, Alex was an excellent!! He shared his knowledge in an entertaining and interesting way. We beat all of the crowds at Tulum and the Cenote. Rogelio was a friendly and courteous driver. He knew all of the clean restrooms and lunch was delicious as well. Far exceeded our expectations.

VIP Tulum Private Tour
We were so happy with our tour! Manuel took care of us so well! He specifically spoke to our 5 year old son and included him in everything, while making sure his safety took precedence! We enjoyed a lovely lunch with our guide on the way home from the cenote after visiting Tulum. We definitely recommend this!

Tulum Ruins, Turtles in Akumal and Cenote tour
Adrain was an amazing gide, very passioned! Tulum was about history, akumal just wonderfull sealife and de cenote all about action! Great tour! Snacks between different activities and a great meal at the cenote. The only thing people need to know before the book this tour is that the road to the cenote is very very very bumpy! You have to have a strong stomach!

Tulum Express Half-Day Tour from Cancun
July 26th trip to Tulum was very good, from Cancun Hyatt Ziva. Our guide was exceptionally good! Nancy Gee is 90, on a Walker and I am 88…sisters. The guide was aware of our age, and helped us enjoy the experience. Thank him again, for us. The Gee’s and Shumakers from Oklahoma and Texas. 😍

Coba, Tulum, Cho-Ha Cenote and Paradise Beach, Premium Service.
Carlos was a fantastic guide. He was so funny, knowledgeable and friendly. The ruins at Coba and Tulum were enriched by the historical and cultural knowledge and significance that Carlos brought to the table. The cenote was such a cool experience. I would absolutely recommend.

Tulum and Cenotes Tour
Amazing tour. I highly recommend since all the services were provided seamlessly. From pick up to the tours, my partner and I enjoyed it all! Ruth was highly knowledgeable and witty when it came to the tour of Tulum. Alan was very funny and kept us amused on the bus ride to the cenote. The cenotes were remarkably pristine and out of this world. We highly recommend it!

Ultimate Tulum Experience Mayan Ruins & Cenote Swim from Riviera Maya
Great Tour! Mary is a very sweet, friendly and funny tour guide. It would be nice to have more freetime (30min- 1h more) in Tulum after visiting the archaeological site, to also visit the beach. It was no 7-8 hrs Tour as described- only 6 hrs.

Discover Tulum, Vist Coba And Swim In A Real Mayan Cenote Round Trip And Buffet
What a great trip!!! The guide explained in clear Spanish and English what to expect. Although it was very crowded in Tulum (VERY crowded!) the team managed to get us through the lines swiftly. The information the guid provided was clear and great. The lunch at the Cenote and the swimm itself were super! Good buffet. And a ver quiet cenote with very little people (in contrast to what we have seen at another trip!). Great trip and well worth the money.

How to Get to the Tulum Ruins

Day trips to the Tulum ruins are available from Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and other locations in Quintana Roo.

When to Get There

As with most popular attractions in subtropical Mexico, the earlier you arrive, the better—walking through the Mayan ruins is a lot more pleasant without the midday sun beating directly down on your head. April through October is considered low season, while you'll see fewer crowds and a little bit of rain in September and October. The rest of the year, the tourist industry is in full swing with heavy crowds, so consider an early-access tour.

Things to Do in Tulum Besides Visiting the Ruins

The ruins are set against a backdrop of some of Mexico's best beaches, such as Akumal, that are ideal for diving and snorkeling. Whale sharks frequent the area from June to September, so if you visit during that time, be sure to book a tour that combines a trip to the ruins with a snorkel expedition to get your own whale shark experience. Tulum also has popular freshwater cenotes and passageways to an underground river.

Boca Paila Beach is a pristine area yet to be invaded by big-name resorts. Local craft markets sell souvenirs, and you can watch the Mayan pole flyers on a walk around town. Tulum Beach Road takes travelers to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere and Punta Allen for swimming in the clear waters, while further along is Tulum Pueblo with its quaint local shops and restaurants.
