Crater Rim Drive

Hawaii

The Basics

The volcanic activity in the park means conditions are constantly changing so keep your plans flexible. Start the drive at the Kilauea Visitor Center to get up-to-date information and watch a movie that shows recent eruptions. Then, continue into the park to see the action in real life. Expect to see steam vents, fissures, sulfur banks, and craters.

You can make the Crater Rim Drive in your own car or join a bus or van tour. You can also bike the rim on a tour that combines sights, exercise, and learning about the Big Island’s geography.
