Daily 7:45am–5pm
Crater Rim Drive, Volcano, 96785

The Basics

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is made up of two different Hawaii volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Often visited on island tours of Hawaii that also include stops at sights such as Rainbow Falls and the Hamakua Coast, Hawaii Volcanoes can also be experienced on a coach tour, a Kilauea volcano bike tour, or during a helicopter ride.

Once there, stop in at the park's Jaggar Museum to learn about earthquakes, geology, and seismology; discover how lava still flows to the sea and occasionally covers roads; and hear the legend of Madame Pele, Hawaii's volcano goddess.

It was really good. We didn’t spend much money and still had guide with us on journey. The guy had really pleasant voice and he was sometimes even funny tho. (to make sure - our guide was just recorded voice in mobile app). It was really helpfull because we had map, music and lot of interesting informations with us. I recommend this guide!

Private Guide: Meet In Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
What a great tour of Volcanoes Nat’l Park. Rob was awesome. Good guy, incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful in recommending other must-do’s on the Big Island. The early-morning start to our day made the experience…seeing the lava flow with clarity was amazing. The other stops on the tour was beautiful and interesting as well. Can’t recommend this tour highly enough!

Big Island - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Driving Tour
This was a wonderful way for our family to go on our own adventure without breaking the bank. We saw the amazing sights of the volcano at our own pace and spent our time only where we wanted to.

Private Guide: Meet In Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
We could have wandered around the Volcanoes National Forest ourselves, but we wouldn’t have known what we were looking at, learned any history about the volcanoes, or heard any Hawaiian folk tales. We loved it, and Skylar was a great guide. We followed our tour with lunch at the Volcanoes restaurant which was a really cool spot and left with plenty of mementoes of our trip.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Experience from Oahu
This was an outstanding driving tour of the big island. Our tour guide Mel was very knowledgeable and did a fantastic job. I took a star away because the company never emailed me my flight reservations which could have been pretty disastrous if I wasn't familiar with traveling in the islands. But once we got there we were very happy with our guide and enjoyed tremendously learning about the islands, history, people and language of Hawai'i.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Hilo Highlights Small Group Tour
Ellen did a great tour. One exceptional thought. She brought binoculars and telescope needed to observe creator floor and hot magma. A nice touch. Great conversation. Good lunch together with family and Ellen.

Big Island - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Driving Tour
This self guided tour app was awesome. It saved us tones of money and easy to navigate. We did not have to worry about big crowds and toured at our on pace. We will diffidently be using this app again when we visit different cities.

Rainbow falls and the active volcano. Josh also had a telescope that allowed us to get a close up view of the lava flow. Great ending at the chocolate factory. Josh was very knowledgeable and a great host.

Private Tour of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
We had such a great time with Scott. Because we booked a private tour, we were able to go at our own pace and spend more time in places we found the most interesting or hop out in unplanned spots. The kids were able to ask questions as they popped up and they left with such an excitement over what they had learned. Definitely something we would recommend!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Experience
This experience was very fascinating! Our tour guide Jeffery was fun and informative. The only thing I wish we could have included was to see where the lava went into the ocean. Other than that, it was a great experience!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Volcanic activity changes on a daily basis, so no two trips are the same.

  • Volcano tours get you close to the action, visiting popular sites such as Halemaumau Crater, the Kilauea Iki crater, and Devastation Trail.

  • Bring a jacket for the brisk air at the 4,000-foot (1,200-meter) Kilauea summit, and pack a rain jacket for the lush environment around the Thurston Lava Tube.

  • Some guided hiking tours go through rugged terrain, which isn't recommended for wheelchairs or travelers with limited mobility.

  • It's important to hike the area around Kilauea safely; consider traveling with a professional tour guide.

How to Get There

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a 45-minute drive south of Hilo and a 2.5-hour drive from Kona. The most popular ways to experience the park are as part of a Hawaii volcano tour, or on a self-guided driving tour of Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road.

When To Get There

Because volcanic activity is tough to predict, it's almost impossible to plan your trip around lava flow. Weather at the park can range from 45°F (7°C) with rain and wind at the summit of Kilauea to 85°F (29°C) by the shoreline; travel with multiple layers that are suitable for all conditions.

Has Kilauea Volcano Caused Any Destruction?

Kilauea has destroyed nearly 200 structures over the course of its most recent eruption. The entire village of Kalapana was covered up by the molten lava, and over 500 acres of new land have been created since 1983. As you'll learn on guided tours, parts of the ground are still very brittle due to the surface being so young.
