What To Expect

After making your own way to the San Diego Zoo on the day of your choice, you can head into the zoo's visitor center to pick up a map and plan your route through this acclaimed zoo. The animals live in spacious and beautifully designed enclosures that replicate their natural habitats. The koala and giant panda exhibits are always popular, as are the orangutans and siamangs that climb around in lush forest settings.

Other highlights include the Tiger River exhibit, which features a realistic Asian rainforest environment, and the Gorilla Tropics, which recreates a lush African rainforest. Zoo keeper talks take place at regular intervals every day, with the experts introducing animals such as giraffes, elephants, wolves, lions or jaguars, and more. In the animal nursery, you might get to see some of the zoo’s newest arrivals.

Kids enjoy petting small tame critters in the Petting Paddock and four different play zones provide a safe and entertaining spot to climb and explore.

As you make your way through the zoo, note the extensive gardens — some of the plants growing there supply ingredients for the specialized diets of particular zoo residents.

Traveler Tips

The zoo, itself is quite hilly, making it difficult to walk in places.
It was a perfect time of year as it was cool and sunny.

I love going and watching the younger kids all excited about seeing the animals. The tram was a great part to, to see how really big the zoo is and finding out where to go see the animals we really wanted to see.

Two Thumbs Up
Elizabeth_D, Jul 2022
My family and I had a great time at the San Diego Zoo. The staff was friendly. Lines at the refreshment stands, bus tour and sky gondola were long but moved quickly. Prices were reasonable for food and souvenirs. San Diego Zoo is a definitely a must do again.
Fabulous
Victoria_R, Jul 2022
Great Zoo Experience! Loved seeing the polar bears! The bus tour was a great way to get an overview of the zoo.

Vivian_O, Jul 2022
We enjoyed the aerial tram tour the most. We couldn't see most of the animals we were looking forward to seeing, maybe they were just out of sight or resting, but was overall a good experience for me and my family.
Good but ticket issue with Viator
Jatin_P, Jul 2022
Zoo was great, albeit quite small. Not sure about Viator ticketing for recess though. The zoo didn’t recognise the tickets Viator issued but the very friendly staff sorted us out anyway. Took about 20 minutes though
A great 8 mile walk through the San Diego zoo
Carl_S, Jul 2022
We rode the shuttle and the gondola and saw every animal at this great zoo. Wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend to anyone who visits San Diego.
Enjoy the Ssn Diego Zoo...
Eleanor_C, Jul 2022
Enjoy the Ssn Diego Zoo very much. The double decker tour was great introduction to the zoo. My grandkids especially enjoyed the polar bear, and sun bear. So fun to learn and see.
Amazing ginormous zoo. A very extrodinary place to see a lot of animals.
Susan_C, Jul 2022
Taking the sky tram was the best, it gave an overview of what there was to see. Make sure you plan to be there the whole day. My daughter decided that I needed an electric scooter, I have walking issues. John was very helpful in directing us where we could go and the best plan of action. There are several people throughout the park to help, dressed in red. We ate at the lagoon cafe near the front entrance and I had the best meatball sandwich ever. I have wanted to come back to this zoo for over 30 years and felt we got to see almost every single part of it. There is a lot of walking though, so plan hats and sunscreen. As with every place, bring your own water as it is a bit expensive to buy.
Huge zoo so wear comfortable shoes and grab a map!
Jennifer_O, Jun 2022
The zoo is huge so wear comfortable shoes or you will be in pain. Take the bus tour by the entrance and then go back and see all the animals on foot. After a while I got the layout which will made it easier for me as time went on. I got lost trying to find the theater show as it’s a very big zoo with lots of different forest passageways. It’s very easy to get lost so get a map. So many restaurants it’s mind blowing and hard to keep track. Beautiful gondola ride overlooking San Diego was my favorite. Wish they had pandas but overall, well thought-out zoo with a water area for the kids at the “Basecamp area” and an “Africa rocks” extension.
Great experience for everyone!!!
Janet_R, Jun 2022
The zoo and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect!!! The ease of ticketing was great!! Recommend to anyone to go this route!
So much fun!
Lauren_O, Jun 2022
My husband and I had a great time at the zoo! So much to see! A tour bus was included, so we were able to see the entire zoo which was really nice. Some of the signage to get from exhibit to exhibit wasn’t very clear, but overall we would certainly recommend this trip to anyone interested in visiting the zoo!
A huge and well...
David_H, Jun 2022
A huge and well maintained zoo. Large and appropriately enclosures, lots of shade for visitors, lots of shops, food and restroom options
Best Zoo Ever
Michael_T, May 2022
I loved the whole experience. The best zoo I have ever visited. The combination of the zoo along with the bus tour and the chair lift was awesome.
Great Zoo
Greg_P, May 2022
As all have said, a great zoo. Friendly staff, cool animals, and well designed. Way too many strollers, and it took us an hour to figure out the map. But all was good!
Reserved ahead from San Francisco
Sarah_Y, May 2022
Easy admission, and we stayed all day & enjoyed it very much! It was easy to plan our visit ahead of time from another city.
Great time at the zoo!

Michael_R, May 2022
They have done an Amazing job with the beauty design of the zoo! Feels like you are in rain Forrest. Fantastic all round!
Seamless Experience
Edwin_K, May 2022
Seamless experience entering the zoo and taking all the tour. Went during the off-peak period, where there were lesser crowds. Do put in sunscreen as it’s burning
SD ZOO is Amazing!
KatieElliott, Apr 2022
The animals were very active during our trip to the zoo. This is a must visit if you are planning a visit to San Diego! The Viator ticket process was seemless.
Do not use this service if you have anyone with disabilities
Veronica_S, Apr 2022
They did not want to refund me my money for 2 tickets unused because it was free for caregivers to attend the part for children/people with disabilities. Very disappointed with this company. Will not use this service again.
