The Basics

As one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is a must-visit for many travelers to Peru. Visitors are required to enter with an official tour guide in small groups of up to 16 people. Entry is permitted in hour-specific time slots and is limited to four hours.

Those pressed for time often visit the ancient ruins on a day trip by train from Cusco, but the 4-day trek along the legendary Inca Trail is another popular option. Some multi-day tour options also visit other regional highlights, such as Lake Titicaca and the Amazon rain forest.

Private Machu Picchu Full-Day Tour from Cusco
Great tour if you dont have time to spend the night close to Machu Picchu. Pickup was on time and the entire trip was long but comfortable. Our guide, Yesenia, was great. The actual tour of the site was obviously on the short side, but if time is an issue, this is a great option. Machu Picchu is just amazing!

Day Trip Tour to Machu Picchu from Cusco
The company guaranteed us the ticket to Machu Picchu even in the very last minute, which was not possible in other tour companies. The local tour guide Mauro was the best guide we could ask for! He was passionate, informative, and caring for my sore ankle. Also, he is the best photographer!

The best tour, stress-free and great value

Full day excursion to Machu Picchu from Cuzco
Definitely the best way to see Machu Picchu. The tour was fully planned out, and once you go through it you realize how quickly it can become confusing and stressful without a well-managed tour. Rony was awesome, and there are people to help you all along the way. If you want to see Machu Picchu and not stress out about it at all and have everything taken care of, this is your tour for a great price. Everything was super smooth.

Machu Picchu Private Full-Day Tour View from Cusco
The planning was well done and overall I felt cared about throughout the journey. The guide in Machu Picchu - Paqo- was a great guy. He gave his best. Overall, everything worked. The last bit, however, did not since nobody was there to pick me up from the bus to bring to the hotel. Had to call the manager. This last part - a transfer by train company’s bus from the train - should have been replaced by private transfer as it was onwards. This was a private tour after all costing good money.

Machu Picchu Day Trip from Cusco
Everything worked well. It makes for a long day, but if you want to see Machu Picchu in a day and still have some time to check out some shops, and enjoy amazing scenery on the train ride, then this is the perfect tour. Getting to the site before the rush of crowds was also nice. Plenty of opportunities to stop for pictures without a bunch of other people getting in the way.

2-Day Tour: Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by Train
Bernardo was a fantastic guide. He was super knowledgeable about many different things and was very friendly and kind. The journey to Machu Picchu was smooth and stress free as the tour took care of every part. The hotel in Aguas Calientes was sufficient for the one night stay and the breakfast was decent.

Private Full-Day Tour To Machu Picchu with Lunch
Knowledge and passionate team from the office staff to the drivers, and of course the guides. We had other excursions that were more adventurous but nothing tops the majesty of Machu Picchu. Buys going on several guided trips but save Machu Picchu for last. You’ll appreciate the lower altitude and tropical flora. Our trip came with an awesome lunch in Aguas Calientes. Definitely worth the extra cost and easily done in one day.

Full-Day Tour to Machu Picchu by Expedition or Voyager Train
Our tour started early, but it was TOTALLY worth it. An amazing experience, very knowledgeable tour guide. He was very passionate and knew how to handle people who weren’t as open to the experience. It was the best way to ring my birthday, and I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Just a heads up though, make sure you have plenty of Soles on you. 2sol for the toilet in Machu Picchu, as well as some toilets in the city requires a payment.

5 Days: Cusco, Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain and Humantay Lake
We had many snags out of the control of the company, including our flight being delayed and the staff for the train to Machu Picchu being on strike, but the tour company was super accommodating and helpful in making sure we got the most out of our experience still! They were very responsive on WhatsApp as well! Both of our guides (Edwar on Rainbow Mountain and Jaír on Machu Picchu) were so kind, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We had a great trip!

How to Get There

The quickest way to Machu Picchu is by train (PeruRail or IncaRail) from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, followed by a short bus ride or steep hike from the town of Aguas Calientes. For some, hiking the Inca Trail is as much a part of the Machu Picchu experience as the ruins themselves. This busy trail isn't the only trekking route; others such as the Salkantay trek or Lares route provide off-the-beaten-path alternatives.

When to Get There

In high season between late May and early September, the Lost City of the Inca allows a maximum of 2,500 people to visit each day. June, July, and August are the busiest and driest months, while January is the wettest and February sees the closure of the Inca Trail. Spring and fall strike a nice balance between pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

Tips for the Inca Trail Hike

If your dream Machu Picchu experience includes hiking the Inca Trail through the Sacred Valley, book well ahead of time, as the number of hikers is limited to 500 per day (including guides and porters). This difficult trail requires a fair amount of physical fitness, particularly given the high altitude in the Andes mountains. Give yourself at least two days in Cusco to acclimatize, and buy some coca leaves to help with any altitude sickness. Pick up a pair of walking sticks too—you'll be glad you did.
