DMZ

Munsan-eup, Majeong-ri,Imjingak Tourist information center

The Basics

Even with its past, the area is quite safe for travelers and is one of the most fascinating day trip options from Seoul. The DMZ can only be visited as part of an organized, guided tour, during which travelers get the chance to see the Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as Panmunjom, where the North and South met for peace talks during the war. Visitors can also see both North Korean and South Korean soldiers each guarding their respective sides of the DMZ. Other common stops on the tour include Imjingak Park, the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, Freedom Bridge, and the Dora Observatory, where it's possible to look across the border into North Korea.

Best Half Day DMZ Tour from Seoul (No Forced Shopping)
Having read a book describing the atrocities occuring on a daily basis in North Korea, being 170m from that border is nearly unfathomable. Our guide, Moon, was terrific. She showed and explained all the history and important landmarks to us and let us ask any questions that came to mind. I definitely recommend visiting the DMZ if you have the chance!

Premium Private DMZ Tour & (Suspension Bridge or N-Tower) include lunch
Don Lee was the best tour guide!! We booked the Premium DMZ tour, and not only got to get a private escort to the DMZ tours, Don was a breathe of fresh air. Giving us great information, super hospitable and he clearly knew his History! He was more than willing to accommodate us outside of the tour travel areas. Overall blessed to be given the tour by him! Also army stew is very nice actually and totally worth it after the hot day tour! All in all if you get Don! Consider yourself lucky!

Best Half Day DMZ Tour from Seoul (No Forced Shopping)
First of all, Sunny is a great guide! She is open to all questions, even if they were not related to the tour. Even though we couldn't visit some locations because of COVID, the tour was nice and interesting. Good mixture of guided parts along with time to walk and look around on your own.

Sadie was a great guide. Very knowledgeable about Korean history (and funny too!). The tour departs very early in the morning, but returns around midday so you have the entire rest of the day to do other activities.

The reality of the divide between north and South Korea. The observatory was my most favourite part and we were lucky to have great views. Our tour guide , Miss Libby , was very informative and friendly.

When to Get There

Tours to the DMZ can be canceled on short notice, so it's a good idea to book for your first full day in Seoul so you have time to reschedule as needed. For the best weather, plan to visit in spring or fall. Expect high humidity and more frequent rainfall during the summer months, and dress for chilly weather in winter—temperatures tend to hover in the 20s and 30s F.

Dress to Impress at the DMZ

The DMZ has a strictly enforced dress code, partly because North Korean soldiers have been known to take photos of poorly dressed tourists to use in propaganda "proving" that other nations are too poor to afford proper clothing. Leave the ripped jeans, sandals, and halter tops at the hotel.
